Description
Chicago. Aug. 7. Win. Smith,
of the Tug Perfection, who struck Robt.
Marshall, a deckhand on the boat, over
the head with an axe at Racine several
weeks ago, will be tried for a trial
committee of the local lodge of the
Licensed Tugman's protective Association
this afternoon. The Perfection
was lying at Racine at the time, and
Cpt. Smith declared upon his return
to Chicago that said was set up upon
Marshall and the second engineer, who
had come aboard the boat intoxicated,
and that he was compelled to use the
ax as a measure of self -protection and
to quell a mutiny on the boat. Some of
the members of the crew have made
different statements, and all of them
are members of the Protective Tugments
Association, charges have been
preferred against Cpt Smith.
It is said that Marshall has been
compelled to return to the hospital
the blow from the ax produced a bad
fracture on the left side of his skull.
His aged father has taken up his case,
and it is said, to have declared that he
will cause Smith's arrest on charges of
assault as soon as the trial In the association
takes place. This trial, of
course, affects Cpt. Smith's standing
as a member of the association. Its
officers declare that strict and impartial
justice will be given all parties, and
marine men are watching the outcome
of the affair with much interest.
