Introduction
The Perrysburg Journal was a weekly newspaper started in 1844. It was originally called the Perrysburg Star but was later renamed to the Perrysburg Jounral in 1868. Stories covered a diverse range of topics, such as national news, international events, and developments in science and industry. Many of these short articles, however, focused on the current local, national, and international political and economic climate. Articles about rioting were genrally quite short and had an avarage of about 80 words per segment. Rioting stories were quite easy to finy because the newspaper covered many out of state and even out of country riots, so I did not have to expand my search paramaters that often. Most of my stories had little information on the race or gender of a victim or perpetrator. This is unsurprising given the fact that it is difficult to identify a specific individual when many people are involved in a riot or mob.
