Rioting in The Perrysburg Journal (Ohio) 1880-1900

Historical Relevance

Forms of rioting and mob behaviour have been a constant and sometimes key element throughout U.S. history. In his article Rioting in America, Paul A. Gilje presents the idea that collective action that is often categorized as "rioting" has led to large important social and political impact. Examples include The Boston Tea Party and the  Homestead Strike. Both of those incdients had very larger ramifications in terms of their impacys on society. The riots I encountered during research were not quite as impactful, but still have somewhat of a relevance in the grand scheme of things. Many of the riots I read about were local labor union strikes, although there was no clear connection between them, it is quite possible that the collective accumulation of such events led to some sort of legislative reform. My research topics were independent of one another for the most part, a few exceptions being larger more violent riots that were covered multiple times in the newspaper.  One riot that was repeated reported about was a large amoubt of mob violence in Akron Ohio that resulted in the governor calling in troops to surpress the riot. Lynchings and other mob driven activities at the time can convey some sort of larger trend that drove cultural change throughout the United States.
