Google Sheets: Creating a chart

To create the graph of the word length of your stories that is on the first page of the example:

The chart is created in Google sheets, from your dataset: the word length is column O.

To have the graph show longest to shortest you need to first sort the data based on column O

    • select column O, then click on Data in menu at the top of page under the sheet title and select ‘Sort sheet by column o Z-A [highest to lowest].

To create the graph

    • With column O selected, click on the insert chart button on the far right of the toolbar [the box with the 3 columns in it].
    • It will open the chart editor and create a chart – a line graph is usually the default, but the first option in the set-up tab of the chart editor is chart type, and you can change it to the bar graph I used.
    • Under the Customize tab are options to change the chart title etc.

To add the graph to your Omeka site you download an image of the chart to your computer, and then upload that image as an item in Omeka.

    • Click on the 3 dots in the top right corner of the chart
    • Select Download as and then then the .png option
    • The instructions for uploading an item are in the assignment instructions on the course website.
