Mapping Private Investigation at the 2025 ASLH conference

I presented an early prototype of a new project mapping early 20th century undercover investigations at the 2025 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Legal History in Detroit on November 14.

Thanks again to Rowan Dorin for organizing the session, including handling the logistical challenge of arranging a projector in an otherwise AV-free conference.

To help promote the session, we also had the opportunity to create a poster on our projects, which I’ve included with this post. The poster focused on a case of fraud involving salted ore at the El Paso Smelter in 1939 and features visualizations of the types of surveillance conducted by Pinkerton investigators and maps of the locations where they worked, highlighting their focus on residences.
