Graffiti House

A house and commercial building, originally located near the Orange & Alexandria Railroad and the Carolina Road, built around 1858.

Where most sites have graffiti from only one side, usually the Union, there is both Union and Confederate graffiti in this building. The earliest dated graffiti names a group of Confederate soldiers on picket duty on 16 March 1863. Confederates may also have used building as a field hospital following the Battle of Brandy Station on 9 June 1863. Later, the Union Army of the Potomac made its winter camp in the area from November 1863 to May 1864, when there is evidence that the building was used as an administrative office by a division headquarters.

Graffiti from both armies survives in three rooms on the second floor. Confederates make up many of the 64 identified soldiers who left signatures. In addition, there are 28 images, including five images of women, several men and a number of horses.
