Carved Names
Soldiers wrote their name on the exterior of buildings as well as the interior. Leaving graffiti on an exterior generally involved using a knife to carve into stone or brick, so involved lettering not signatures (and only writing, not drawing). Carved signatures could not be covered over and destroyed after the war as easily as marks with pencil and charcoal
Soldiers also carved their names or initials into interior surfaces, such as door frames, floors and windowills.
