The Marvin Bolton Farm

This record shows Marvin shortly after the war in possession of a large farm that seems to be doing well--160 acres, 100 of them improved the rest wooded; a cash value of $6000 on the land alone; 4 horses, 11 cows, 50 sheep, 4 swine; and the production of 1326 combined bushels of wheat, corn, oats and barley.

Marvin Bolton owned a sizable farm where he lived his entire life after the war.  He and his sons ran the farm with the help of occasional hired hands.  Despite debilitating health complications due to injuries sustained at Gettysburg, Marvin contined to work the farm himself right up until his death, due to a farm accident, at the age of 62.

Almost half of all Union Soldiers were, like Marvin Bolton, farmers in their civilian lives.
