The Injury

Google Ngram

Google Ngram is a tool used to discover trends in word usage over a large body of texts. During the period of 1830-1930, there was a distinct jump for the words "wounded", "injury", and "wound." This is a good indication that there were not only more injuries during this time, but that it was in the public conciousness more. People were writing about the subject. The trends spikes again concurant with Milon Robinson's first pension application. Many civil war soldiers were applying for a first pension around this time. Wounds were getting worse with time as well.

"About the 1st of December 1864 at Sylvania near Millen, Georgia, Milon O. Robinson, together with others and myself were captured while on a foraging expedition. Robinson's horse was shot and killed, falling on Robinson and injuring his left ankle." - F. D. Roudenbush

Here Milon gives a short account of the event of his injury. Milon had been sent behind the main line with a small detachment to secure rations. His group was attacked by a Confederate detachment. It is unclear whether there were any deaths or if the entire group was captured.
