Veterans Home

On March 18th, 1890, the Marion Branch of the Veteran's Affairs National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers opened in Marion Indiana and this is the place that Adam would spend the last four years of his life.

This particular branch was built here because there a natural gas well in the area and because of this Marion had become a boom town. The branch was approved in 1888 and it took $200,000 to build it.

Adam took up residence there seven months after it opened and this was about the time he initially applied for his invalid pension. It is unknown where his wife lived during this time, though they were clearly still married.

Within ten years of opening, this branch would have about 1800 men living there, but as the 1900's picked up steam, the branch would lose more and more soldiers, as all of the Civil War veterans were dying off.

While today, the Marion Branch is a part of the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System, there are still many of the old structures still visible, notably the National Cemetary on the eastern side of the complex. This is where Adam rests even now, and where the pictured headstone is located (NPS).
