Germans in Philadelphia
Though Adam was born in Bavaria Germany, sometime in his adolescence he would have emigrated to the United States, and while there is no specific evidence of when he came to America, it is reasonable to assume that he came in 1850's a time when over one million German immigrants arrived in the United States (Library of Congress). Adam enlisted in Philadelphia and married Mathilda Jung there immediately after he was discharged from the army, so it seems reasonable that he spent his time after immigrating in Philadelphia, probably in the Germantown that was founded by Quaker and Mennonite immigrants in the late 1600's. It is interesting to note that the Germans of Germantown, Pennyslvania were particularly outspoken against slavery so there was a very large amount of volunteers from Germantown, and Adam, as well as the rest of the 29th Infantry were a part of this (Philadelphian Neighborhoods).
