First Battle of Bull Run

Barely a month after signing his life to the Union military, Adam would find himself on the Manassas Virginia battlefield about to take part in the First Battle of Bull Run.

The First Battle of Bull Run would be the bloodiest in American history up to that point (though it would be surpassed in the next few years). This was also the first real battle of the Civil War. Like Adam's final battle, this one too would be won by the Confederacy.

On July 21, 1861 the battle raged on as General Thomas Jackson held the high ground of Henry House Hill, later earning him the nickname Stonewall, and the confederate soldiers flanked the Union army, quickly driving them back to Washington DC.

It was after this battle, that President Lincoln knew that this was not going to be a short war, but a long and costly one, both with money and casualties.

After this battle, Adam and the rest of Company K would stay fairly close to the battlefield, in Fairfax, protecting the Union's capital city from the Confederates.
