Battle of Chancellorsville
The final battle that Adam and the rest of the 29th New York Infantry would take part in was the bloody Battle of Chancellorsville. The Confederacy would end up winning a bittersweet victory here in Spotsylvania, winning the battle at the cost of losing their General "Stonewall" Jackson.
Adam would have made his way down to Fredericksburg with Company K and the rest of the 29th New York Regiment during January of 1863. This particular march was known as the Mud March, and was absolutely awful. Cold and wet, the 29th trudged through the swamps of Northern Virginia to reach Fredericksburg, just north of the Confederate capital, Richmond, where they would only encounter blood, death, and more cold. Well before the Battle of Chancellorsville, the 29th would arrive in and make camp in Stafford Court House near Fredericksburg and then they would wait there until mid-spring, when the Battle of Chancellorsville would take place.
The battle itself would take place from May 1st to May 6th. The third day would be the second bloodiest day in the entire war with 21,357 men lost, nearly equal numbers from both sides. After this day, the Union, with the 29th with them, would begin withdrawing from the battle. The night of May 5th, General Hooker would order a quiet retreat of his forces across the nearby river and when General Lee would attempt to attack the Union forces the next day, the soldiers were already long gone.
This would be Adam's final military engagement before being discharged and going back to his home in Philadelphia.
