Military Service

Consider Flower volunteered to serve in the First Regiment of Michigan Cavalry in August, 1861. He was injured at the Second Battle of Winchester, in May 1862, but remained with the regiment, performing light duty and carrying dispatches. Those assignments may have meant that he did not fight in subsequent battles at which he was present, including Gettysburg. Nonetheless, he re-enlisted for a second term in 1863, much of which he spent assigned to the Brigade headquarters.

The Map below shows the movements of the First Michigan Cavalry for the entire period of Flower's service. Maps in sections of the site focus on shorter timeframes in order to present a less cluttered picture.

  • The pins are locations that Flower's unit visited.
  • The explosions are sites of the unit's battles with Confederate forces.
  • The horses are locations where the unit camped
