Men from Michigan

Consider Flower enlisted in the Union Army on August 19, 1861, in his community. He then travelled just over 100 miles to Detroit to join up with the rest of his unit, the First Michigan Cavalry, on August 21.

The First Michigan Cavalry consisted of 1,144 officers and men when they left the state on September 29, 1861. A total of 2,486 men would serve in the unit in the course of the war.
