Mustered Out

The 1st Michigan Cavalry remained in service in the West until March 10, 1866. They should have been discharged in September 1865, but those orders were not carried out.

When the soldiers were mustered out, it was at Fort Bridger, in the Utah territory. Flower and his comrades faced enormous travel costs to get from Utah back to their homes, beyond many of them. A subsequent investigation highlighted their situation, and a Congressional appropriation was obtained to allow them to recoup the costs.
